For the past two years, I have interned at the Maryland General Assembly (MGA). The MGA is the governing body for the state of Maryland, similar to Congress. Specifically, I interned for Delegate Jessica Feldmark who represents Maryland’s District 12A, which includes Wilde Lake.
A family friend first connected me with the delegate. I sent in a resume, a writing sample, and participated in a virtual interview. While I had a connection, many delegates, including Delegate Feldmark, will respond to cold emails from high schoolers inquiring about a possible internship. Students can also take the HCPSS class Intern/Mentor to try and secure an internship with a delegate. You can find your representative in the “Find My Representatives” portion of the Maryland General Assembly website.
My internship started with writing email drafts and working on spreadsheets, but over time, my internship entailed more. I completed larger projects like researching current issues and upcoming legislation. I also had the opportunity to watch the House of Delegates in session on Mondays when I went into the office from 4-8pm. Throughout my time, I formed close relationships with other interns and professionals in the office.
Interning for Delegate Feldmark helped me earn a spot in the MGA Student Page Program. This is an opportunity for seniors in the state of Maryland to live in Annapolis for two weeks while working on the House or Senate floor during session. This experience was absolutely amazing. It allowed me to meet many great people and gain a deeper understanding of Maryland politics. I strongly encourage each and every junior to apply for this position next year.
These two experiences have prepared me for my future career, especially if I go into politics or business. I have learned valuable skills, such as how to act in a professional environment, complete high-level research, and form business relationships.
The most important thing to know is that you have more power to shape local politics than you think, so don’t be intimidated to reach out to your representatives. They want to help you and get to know you, and it makes for an unforgettable experience.
