With two new starting freshmen and experienced returning players, the girls basketball team has managed to earn a 7-10 record this season.
Last year, girls basketball didn’t have enough players for a junior varsity (JV) team, according to head coach Rhonda Corkeron. However, this year, the team recruited 11 players on Varsity and 10 on JV.
“We have enough for two complete teams, so we are able to scrimmage at practice, which means we can practice our plays and practice our defense,” she said.
The freshmen class has contributed to the team’s success this season. According to the Baltimore Sun, freshman starter Maggie Shidle scored over 50% of the points against Marriotts Ridge on February 3 with a career-high 23 points. Maggie says the freshmen are helping “change the narrative” for the team.
Coach Corkeron also attributes the team’s improved record to their bonding. “The girls really genuinely like each other,” she said. “They work hard together because they have to work together in order to be successful on the court.”
Newcomers also attest to the team’s collaboration, as Maggie says “all the girls are really nice and are easy to get along with.”
Senior starter Jordyn Bennett says as the team learns together, they will continue to improve. “We have numbers, experience, and are building that chemistry as a team,” said Jordyn. “We just have to keep learning from each other and working together.”
