Wilde Lake High School witnessed an amazing fall sports season across all sports this year. So many Wildecats shined in their respective sports, and the Lake even came home with a win at the regional championship level. Big contributions from star athletes and encouraging coaches made the fall 2025 sports season one to remember. Let’s dive into this special season at the Lake.
First, the soccer program turned some heads this year with impressive accomplishments all around. The girls’ soccer team, under new head coach Ben Townsend, finished with a record of 4-10, including big wins over Guilford Park, winning 10-1, and Hammond, winning 5-0. Additionally, two Wilde Lake records were broken this year on the field. Tiffany Blakey set the all-time record for goals scored in Wilde Lake Girls’ Soccer with 58 career goals. Their goalie, Maggie Shidle, also broke the record for most saves in a single season, accomplishing this feat as just a sophomore. Both Wildecats made their mark on the girls’ soccer program, and their accomplishments will live in the history books for years to come.
The Boys’ Soccer Team, led by Coach John Robbins, brought home a regional championship this year with a thrilling 2-1 win over the defending state champions, River Hill. This was a sweet victory after tying the Hawks earlier in the season, just as they defeated Mt. Hebron High School, the defending state finalists, 3-2 following a previous 0-0 tie. Big contributions from seniors Bricen Manderson and Jayden Rivera propelled the Wildecats to a successful season. Young stars like Cole Payne and Max Angell are already building their legacy in the boys’ soccer program, and their future should be exciting to watch in the seasons to come.
Wilde Lake’s Volleyball program shined brightly this year with countless fun moments and great memories. It is the only sport able to roster three full teams: varsity, junior varsity, and freshman. The varsity team was led by junior student-athletes Peyton Kim and Lindsey Doggette. The program hosted Centennial High School for its annual Pink Out game, a highly anticipated tradition in Lake Volleyball. Seniors Cianni Finnerty, Leslie Ramirez, London Bruton, Alia Abdurrahman, and Sanaa Blake were honored during senior night against Southern High School, a regional opponent. Overall, the volleyball program continued to develop strong young women who will carry their Wilde Lake pride for years to come.
The Wilde Lake Field Hockey team finished the season with a record of 4-11 under the leadership of Coach Virginia Kincaid. Coach Kincaid completed her 49th year of coaching in Howard County this year and will enter her 50th year in 2026. The team earned dominant wins over opponents such as Oakland Mills and Guilford Park. In addition, the field hockey program put Wilde Lake on the state map with strong victories over out-of-county teams such as North Point High School and Severn Run High School. Junior goalie Delaney Malloy produced several elite performances while guarding the net. She looks to earn another All-County selection after receiving First Team All-County honors last year. Overall, the season was filled with exciting games and concluded with a memorable senior night celebration against River Hill.
The Wilde Lake Cross Country program made headlines at both the county and state levels this year. Coached by teacher Eric Myers, the team advanced far into the season through hard work and consistency. The standout athlete on the boys’ cross country team, sophomore Wesley Zaron, delivered impressive performances late in the year. He finished third in the Men’s County Championship, sixth in the 2A West Regional Championship, and sixth in the 2A West State Championship. Seniors Aidan Thur and Jeremiah Everett also delivered solid performances at the State Championship, both finishing in the top 50. The girls’ cross country team was led by sophomores Elyse Goode and Faith Myers. Elyse placed 37th, and Faith finished 41st in the 2A West Regional Championship. The school can look forward to continued success from these promising young runners. The long season was filled with great memories, new personal records, and impressive results.
The Wilde Lake Football Team overcame significant adversity this season and gained momentum during the second half of the year. Head Coach Brian Henderson achieved a remarkable milestone. After battling a rare and serious medical condition throughout the winter and summer, Coach Henderson worked tirelessly to return to leading the team every Friday night under the lights. With standout performances from electrifying players such as Jaydin Gore and Kyle Young-Alston, the football team won four of its final five regular-season games. Veteran lineman Yoni Yohannes commented, “I think with the challenges the season started with, we could have folded very early.” He believes the team’s strong finish “was a testament to how resilient the team is and what made the year so special.” Gore and Young-Alston both finished in the top ten in county receptions. Perseverance and resilience propelled the Wilde Lake football team to a memorable and meaningful season.
Wilde Lake’s Head Athletic Director, Coach Tee, was hard at work throughout the fall. She can often be found at practices, games, and team celebrations such as banquets. Wherever she is, she brings positive energy and an uplifting spirit. Whether at opposing schools or at the Lake, Coach Tee consistently shows pride in the Wilde Lake athletics program. “It was incredible to see our Wildecat spirit remain strong, no matter the situation,” said Coach Tee. Some of her favorite moments each fall are senior nights. She shared, “This fall, we celebrated 53 senior student-athletes and an additional 23 marching band seniors, which was really incredible.” The success of the Wilde Lake Athletics community would not be possible without Coach Tee’s dedication and hard work.
This winter season is shaping up to be another exciting chapter for Wilde Lake Athletics. “There is a ton of excitement surrounding the basketball programs, with our boys’ team competing in the county title game last year and our girls’ team advancing to states,” said Coach Tee. The school also looks forward to watching the wrestling program grow and succeed with new coaches and athletes. Additionally, the cheer team aims to return to the regional championship following an impressive season last winter.
Wilde Lake students are eager to compete this winter and continue representing their school with Lake Pride.
