Mrs. Somerville is one of the administrators here at Wilde Lake High School. She’s the new assistant principal and is looking forward to a good year. Mrs. Somerville may be about discipline, but she’s the kind of employee every student needs in their school life. She loves working with children, and what keeps her going back is seeing the transformation of the students, from being freshmen to progressing into mature, well-developed minds, and then being able to graduate. That’s what Mrs. Somerville loves seeing: she gets to play that over and over again, giving her a sense of accomplishment.
Mrs. Somerville used to be a teacher and taught English for 10 years before leaving the classroom and becoming an assistant principal. She worked with new teachers and coached them too, earning her current position. There are many difficult aspects of her job, but one of them is juggling all the administrative responsibilities while still building relationships with staff. It’s something she’s good at, but it can still be a challenge to balance.
One thing that Mrs. Somerville sees here at Wilde Lake is the teachers’ passion for their content and for their students. She really admires the different teachers who come in early and stay late planning engaging lessons. When sharing about her role, she notes, “As administrators, we oversee different departments, and in doing so, we support the department. We work with the department leaders to make sure they have what they need, and a lot of that work is to make sure that they’re inspired and that they have the tools that they need so that they can lead those programs and make sure their instruction is strong within their classrooms.”
Seeing achievements and growth in her students coming in and out of Wilde Lake is something that makes Mrs. Somerville happy. As she explains, “I love the energy at Wilde Lake. I love the Wilde Lake pride. I love how we had homecoming. I love how enthusiastic students were at the pep rally. I love how even at the dance everyone was having a good time. You support your school, and I love that.”
It is a pleasure to have you, Mrs. Somerville!
