Wilde Lake has the pleasure of welcoming a brand new history teacher to the staff for the 2025-26 school year. Howard County native Eric Myers is in his 23rd year of teaching, and this year is his first year here at Wilde Lake. He is on a mission to connect with and make a difference in the lives of the students he teaches.
Mr. Myers originally found his love for history back in his early days as a child. “When I was younger, my parents would always take me traveling to Europe and such. As well as my mother actually majored in history, so I talked a lot with her about it when I was in college,” says Myers. Interestingly enough, he didn’t know that his career would involve history at first. “I actually started out as an engineering major, and then I took a couple of classes in engineering and decided I didn’t like what I’d have to do the rest of my life,” says Myers. His next option was history, his second favorite subject. Mr. Myers also commented that teaching gave him the opportunity to coach. He is the cross-country and track coach here at Wilde Lake.
Additionally, Mr. Myers says that “as a teacher, what [he is] concerned with is that a kid has a plan after high school that’s going to make them successful.” He puts a strong emphasis on making sure that students are set up for success after their years here at the Lake. As a government teacher as well, he is on a mission to educate future adults to be able to vote. “At some point, they’ll be 18 and voting, and they’ll hopefully vote for what’s good for their pocketbook,” says Myers.
Mr. Myers spent the majority of his teaching career at Long Reach High School here in Howard County. He is already having a great time here at the Lake, rolling into a brand-new environment. “There’s much more history here at Wilde Lake,” says Myers, which is perfect for his subject of teaching. Furthermore, he is a fan of the new ROAR Program at Wilde Lake, a program where student leaders can connect with other students to create a stronger school community.
After just a few months teaching at the Lake, Mr. Myers is already confident that the students at Wilde Lake are achieving as well as anybody in the county. Myers explained that his goal is to “change everybody’s perception of what the school is.” He believes that the top students at Wilde Lake can compete with anybody in the county. “Our best kids are just as good or better than the top kids at schools like Centennial or River Hill,” said Myers.
The welcoming of Eric Myers into the Wilde Lake community is a huge win for the school’s staff, culture, and most importantly, students.
