After reviewing a poll posted on The Paw Print’s Twitter account, The Paw Print has determined that in this day and age, a set of guidelines is needed in order to maintain the integrity and objectivity of our news. Our guidelines are as follows:
Reporting on social media can give readers valuable insights into the day’s news. However, it’s necessary that we understand that the social media platform is not just for spreading information. So, be careful, skeptical, and transparent. Be sure that what is passed on is credible and valuable, and tell readers what has been confirmed and what hasn’t.
- Keep a familiar, yet formal tone.
- Report news, not controversy or rumors.
- No sarcasm. No satire.
- When in doubt, leave it out.
- Take care in posting images.
- Be honest and transparent.
- Do not publish news on social media that should be covered in-depth or that requires context.
- Do not publish information that might be considered libelous.
- If a story is “red flagged,” posts must be approved by the advisor and the administrator.
- Avoid allowing opportunities for “free-for-all” commentary from staff and students.
